Another great installment. I was annoyed at first because I hate when the male (in this case, Charles) goes all alpha "I need to protect you from me". Why they think they can get away with shutting their women out, I will never understand. But I liked that they went together to be detectives again. I love Anna, and how strong she is becoming.

Woot! Was that a great ending, anybody else, who has read this book looking forward to this war?? (I oddly wasn't even thinking of it.)

For me, this book was perfect! The story was rich with intrigue, tension and just the right touch of romance. It was a very satisfying mix of everything I love about the fantasy/sci-fi/urban-fantasy genre. Brigg's writing, already good, just keeps getting better and better!

Can't wait to begin the next one. In this it has been some time since Anna and Charles got married *I know obviously since this is book three* . It begins with their relationship having some strain due to Charles being his dad's enforcer but they are asked to help the FBI with a case of a serial killer. My favorite thing about Patricia Briggs writing is how well it is written and the steady pace it moves in, without revisiting previous books too much or a whole chapter on the intimacy of the characters. Highly recommend this book.

Set a couple of years after Hunting Ground, this book start with Anna and Charles's relationship not being in the greatest place -- being the Marrok's enforcer is weighing on Charles and he won't let Anna in to help him. At Adam Hauptman's suggestion, Bran sends Anna and Charles to Boston to help with a case, hoping it will help to clear Charles of his low mood. The wolves have clearly come out to the public since the last book so it was interesting to see Anna and Charles have to contend with humans who know what they are as well as other supernatural creatures (fae, witches, no vampires this time).
Anna's clearly come a bit more into her own since the events of Hunting Ground; at times she takes the lead over Charles and seems quite comfortable doing it. She's not frightened by any of the government agents she has to deal with and doesn't seem to be frightened of other wolves anymore either, although we don't see them in the same numbers as in Hunting Ground.
The ending felt a bit...not quite abrupt but clearly a next book was planned. I would have liked a bit more of a resolution with the FBI agent Leslie, since the book starts with a background story about her, unless we're going to see her again in a later book; it wouldn't surprise me if we see the Boston alpha, Isaac again too.
As always, my favorite part of this series is the relationship between Charles and Anna and seeing how they work through challenges together. A second favorite is seeing the two of them with Bran who, while I get that he generally has to stay in Montana to look after his pack, I find myself always wishing he was in these books just a bit more.

Trigger warning rape & child assault.
Patricia Briggs using rape as a plot device for a third time in the same series & character world is pathetic & lazy. I’m taking a break from this series & author.

Fair Game is when we see Anna take the wheel. Charles is off his game. His wolf is acting weird. He hasn’t touched Anna in months. She only just found her mate and fears she may lose him. Not without a fight. Bran has been working Charles overtime policing wolves after they’ve come out of the supernatural closet. Charles would never admit it. His mind understands the reasoning. His heart disagrees with the harsh methods. To give himself a break as an executioner, Charles and Anna go to Boston to help the FBI with a serial killer case. The killer is hunting supernatural beings and has recently taken the daughter of a Fae Gray Lord. Lots of government agencies are involved. One is interested in locking up monsters. When these humans meet beautiful Anna, they can’t reconcile that this unassuming woman is deadly. They reluctantly let Anna and Charles consult on the case. A keen FBI agent who has met a Fae as a child has always been suspicious of anything other. When lives are on the line, she welcomes any help she can. Most of the book focuses on solving the case, but Charles’ internal struggle with his killer nature is woven throughout. I liked how Briggs layered the police procedural elements with the fantastic. I love this genre mix when watching shows like Grimm or The Dresden Files. They have a case to solve. They can’t do it the conventional way when monsters are the killers.
I highly recommend this series if you’re into werewolf romances with a healthy dose of action. You don’t necessarily need to read the Mercy books. We have a unique couple navigating their relationship in a world that only recently has learned the Fae and werewolves exist. Life won’t be boring for these two.
