Upgrading from 4 stars to 5 stars. Emma Bovary has stuck with me and I think of her often

I swear by the steegmuller translation - I've read excerpts of others and they do not compare. I can't believe how often I think of Emma.

Lost in the translation of time and culture? Okay, scandalous because of her affairs, but her abject financial sense was more problematic, to me. Were the two "sins" linked or equally representative of her poor judgement? and why the opening school room scene with Charles, if he's not even the main character? I don't think I got this one.

Really compelling story with characters that are very reflective of reality. The frustration one feels watching an ill-thought-out life unfold is powerful. In each of these characters is a bit of us, some more than others, and our lives are not so dissimilar today as they were in this setting. Only critique is wordiness and over-description.

Honestly on a reread, I still loved Flaubert's use of language and the juxtaposition of the pretty and the ugly in this text. That being said, now that I'm older, I wonder how much of Flaubert's own misogyny made its way into the text?
