Overall a beautifully written book of a woman pondering on events in her life. Definitely can stray into some theologically dangerous territory at times, but it’s still worth it to see her struggle with faith. It’s also especially worthwhile if you’ve read A Wrinkle in Time, to hear about some of her writing and publishing process. I definitely enjoyed it and recommend it, but just a heads up on some of the theological error. She writes in a way that inspires for sure!

“I suppose I write for children because I am not bright enough to understand the difference between a children’s and an adult’s novel.”

“...joy is always a promise.”

“I wish that we worried more about asking the right questions instead of being so hung up on finding the right answers.”

I have been reading this book off and on for years (I have to admit it also got misplaced in a move!) but I believe you read books when you were supposed to and I finished it this weekend for a reason.

Musings on life, art, motherhood, faith, and writing that mostly all still hold up . While I don’t always agree with L’Engle, she always makes me think and it feels like talking to a friend as you read her journal.

At the end, L’Engle is always hopeful, always wanting humanity to rise to the occasion, and I found that comforting.

This was l o v e l y. I've loved L'Engle's writing for years--ever since, of course, a Wrinkle in Time and the books that followed--but until Jenny nudged this one towards me, I'd completely missed her memoirs. There are many things here that I related to (personally, spiritually, occasionally existentially), but ultimately this showed me the heart of a storyteller whose stories I love and respect, and that is a unique and powerful thing.
