Describing this book as horror is just wrong as it’s lacking all the characteristics of a horror novel. The plot is just way too confusing, so abstract that it ends up lost in the ether and it makes sense only for the author. I just want to say both the cover and the summary at the back are deceiving as that’s not what the book is about. I couldn’t feel any horror or gothic vibes at all while reading the book. The writing can be in some parts nice and poetic, but it’s far too little to make this a good book

I examined the portraits nearest to me but couldn't get past the sensation that here was the same man over and over, crouched in old boxes, readying himself to spit on my plate.

This book fucking ruled. Stylistically tight, ambitious, delicious, Oyeyemi has to be one of my newest favorite writers. A postmodern and delightful subversion and confrontation of the Gothic genre. I loved this book and I am excited to read more from Oyeyemi. I am giving this a five-star rating despite the fact that at parts I think it lacks clarity and connective tissue because I just fucked with it so heavily. I can see how people might not have liked this, but it was a page-turner for me-- I honestly couldn't put it down.

I haven't finished this book yet and I don't know if I will eventhough I only have 40 pages left. I like the writing style but it's almost a book without a story, nothing happens. If you start reading this because the writing on the back interested you you'll be disappointed.

A book that rejects any attempt to make sense of it, although it is very compelling to try to piece together what happened to the family and what is happening to Miranda. Honestly this is one of those books that's best read in a group setting like an English class or book club because it's interesting to discuss what happened (especially that ending!)
