Never in a million years did I think I would like this book as much as I did! I started it knowing it would push me out of my normal comfort level.
This is a very strange book. As foreign as fantasy to me as I have zero commonality with the characters. There was never a moment when I thought, “Yes, I know how that feels.” Because the 1993 New York sex, drugs & rockin’ roll scene is not relatable or appealing to me at all. I would never like to hangout with these people in real life, it would be too revolting.
And with all that said, I thought this book was fantastic entertainment!
The book is all dialogue and conversations between Jonathan and those around him. It reminded me of Elmore Leonard’s writing, which is a big compliment. The pop culture, friendships and pursuit of dreams kept me hooked. And the mystery of the missing bass. Because the reveal of the “bad guy” was simply perfect.

I really wanted to like this book, the blurb seemed interesting. Despite being only about 200 pages it felt like the story took forever to get going. By the time it did pick up I didn’t care about and wasn’t invested in any of the characters.

I wish I could give this a half star. I’m glad it’s over.
I’m curious what Lipsyte was trying to accomplish with this book. He’s obviously exploring traditional masculine gender norms, but what else? Is there anything else? It doesn’t really feel that way.
I think Donald Trump’s short appearance in the book was so, so unnecessary. And not in a “I dislike Donald Trump” way, but in a “how does this character propel the story” way.
