A great compilation of short stories and poems by people who have lived through the immigrant experience.

I didn’t know that it included stories from non-Latino immigrants. That was definitely a blind spot for me and it was great to hear those stories as well.

As a first gen child of immigrants it was interesting and oddly comforting to hear stories that were similar to my family’s and also so very different. It reminded me of how fortunate I have been and all the sacrifices made in order to provide me opportunities that would not have otherwise been available to me.

This is an excellent and topical curated collection of essays shedding light on migrants in the US from a diverse range of backgrounds, cultures, identities, and experiences. Stating that “it’s easy to get in this country” or even that “it’s hard” does not begin to give space for the complexity of what being an immigrant (documented or undocumented) means. This is potent, eye opening, and a testimony of humanity.

I wanted to expand my reading tastes, but I think poetic interpretations of this topic are not my cup of tea. I lean more toward memoirs.

It was cool to try and I’m glad that at least I know more about my tastes now :)
