I really wanted to love this. I saw the series a few years ago and loved it. They say the book is always better but it n this case I disagree. I will continue to watch the rest of the series but may not  continue with the books sadly.

So.

I sat on this review for a bit. Why did I give it three stars? Why did I deny it four, or five?

For a mystery, it's not that engaging. The character building is nice an the plot is interesting, but it felt lacking. It felt like all your favorite ingredients were in a drink, but it just wasn't made right. So it tastes off. This book felt off.

But I devoured it, and now I'm on book two.

The biggest problem I'm having is this instant attraction between Robin and Strike that JKR writes as if the characters are oblivious to their own fascination in one another. But guess what, Strike thinks about Robin a bit more heavily than Robin thinks about Strike. Strike finds her beautiful. Strike wants to pursue a relationship, but the ring is in his way, so he's grateful for that.

I think it just developed a little too fast and it just didn't simmer and boil. It just erupted.

So now I want it to happen, and I hate her boyfriend/fiance/intended with a passion.

So, the mystery was okay, the story was okay, but the character development shined more. I want to know why Strike wanted to be a detective - what made him go from the war to starting a detective agency? Hopefully time will tell.

J.K. Rowling has done it again! What I love about her is how unbelievably accurate she is with details throughout her writing. Every little thing counts and everything will eventually fall perfectly into place: J.K. Rowling simply has this gift for pulling a story together and taking you on a journey with its characters. I have to admit I found it a little hard to keep myself interested in the first chapters, but there was this point in the book when I simply got hooked. After that it was a complete page turner, I could not put it down until I finished it. I could picture the characters, hear their voices, see the places described: the storytelling was amazing throughout the entire book. I am clearly not disappointed, despite the fact that this is the first post-Harry Potter book I read from Rowling, I think she is clearly a brilliant writer and has proved it once again.

A nice cozy mystery! Will probably remind one of Agatha Christie's mysteries.
