My rating is really for the whole series which was an enjoyable little escape, though I skimmed a fair deal.

I give this book maybe a higher rating than I should for a YA book, but this series has a special place in my heart, so I’m a little bias. Great read for middle school-early high school kids.

This fairy tale for middle schoolers clearly stresses strict obedience and undue caution over creative thinking. The moral is tainted, in that the creative boy is sheerly reckless time after time, while his sister is a cringeworthy sort of goody two shoes right up until real jeopardy threatens their family as well as the entire fairy estate; real children mostly fall between these extremes. Choosing the girl to be the cautious one, as well, is just sexist.

The author lays it on too thickly to make his preaching stick. Children today would see right through this--and that's a good thing.

In the first half of the book, I really kinda wanted to punch Seth. Repeatedly. But I still enjoyed the story, and he does get better. Hopefully later in the series he matures and becomes a more endearing character.

Bland characters, the mysteries are very thinly veiled... Main characters are annoying. I really wanted to like this, but it just rambled without a central motivating plot too long.

I loved this book. Even better than I remember. Seth was the only bad part.

Just amazing, I love these books and the world they take place in. This was a re-read for me and I'm definitely going to read the rest of them again as well! I'm so excited.
