A historical fiction graphic novel that is first and foremost an adventure tale, which brings to mind such adjectives as rollicking, swashbuckling, and rip-roaring.

I imagine this will be an easy rec to many middle grade readers - do you like stories with twins (not one set but double the fun with two!), hidden identities, pirates, stowing away, sword fighting, ghostly mermaids, stormy seas, daring bravery and everyday objects that contain secret treasure maps? Did I have you at pirates or ghost mermaids?

One of the main characters gives such strong trans guy vibes and I wish the book had explored that.

A rousing pirate adventure! This was a lot of fun: twins, treasure maps, disguises, and storms at sea. Looking forward to the next book.

Very successful at being what it is, a less racist Tintin-style adventure story.

This book is such a fun action/adventure graphic novel series. Alex and Cleo are interesting characters and the first book has a strong supporting cast. The art is not my favorite but it is playful and sufficient which helps lighten some of the more serious moments. As a graphic novel, this entry does a great job at building up to a mystery and epic quest but not much is a achieved by the end. While this may bother some, knowing that it is a series and that the story will continue, this didn't bother me at all. There are some romantic moments in the first book but they are very PG and appropriate. For those looking for a graphic novel that takes place in the real world and doesn't deal with (so far) fantasy/sci-fi elements, this is a great pick.

Very cute, but I had a terrible time with the characters in regards to figuring out who was who. Two sets of twins in a graphic novel?? It can be confusing. That being said, very cute. I'm planning on reading the second installation

adventurous, charming, and fun. A lovely graphic novel in which two sets of twins get separated from each other, try to find their missing half, and escape from pirates and evildoers at the same time. A lot of shenanigans and chaos ensued.

read if you like found family, ships, sibling bonds, succeeding in adversity, and fast-paced adventures.
