I enjoyed this book. It was a very interesting world/situation/setting to take place. Full of wonder and things to learn.
I have to say though it was not all that challenging. I figured out almost all the mysteries long before they where revealed. And that was early on in the book. So once I had it all figured out, I just kept reading to find out if I was right or not. But I still enjoyed it. but taking place on a generational ship traveling across the stars? What an interesting setting. I enjoyed the new world. It was simple, but a very nice new world to experience.
So overall, a good story. Not all that surprising, but still enjoyable. And full of moral choices. What would you do if you where eldest?

I thought the writing style was a little bleak, but I actually loved the concept.

I HAVE NEVER GIVEN A BOOK ANYTHING UNDER THAN FIVE STARS WHAT I HAPPENED WHOA
But I know what's happening. This book made me sad. Disappointed.
The excitement of this book leaked off onto me and I bought it giddy and happy, but finished it truly trying to decide if I will continue onto the next book.
Everything about this book confused me. One minute it's good, the next I'm disgusted.
It was just a very disturbing, awkward book all around, from writing style to character relationships to plot. Disturbing.
The romance in it is very thin, and makes me incredibly angry, especially near the end. Not only is Elder almost creepily obsessed with Amy, it seems Amy doesn't even spare a second thought to him half the time. Which is just asdfghjkl.
The only good part about this book was Harley. I wanted to quit halfway through, but and only he is the reason I pushed through and finished it. HARLEY. MEH PRECIOUS. And the the ending. And now I don't even know.
There were many scenes in this book that I think were entirely unnecessary, that pretty much ruined the whole thing for me, making me not even notice the parts that may or may not be good.
Characters were okay not great.
Plot was moving and mysterious, but still just only okay.
That's the thing about this book--it was simply okay. Not great or perfect or epic.
Just okay.

I don't think this book was for me. While I did like the premise, I just couldn't relate to the characters and I felt as a whole, it lacked subtlety.

So, First reaction was:

ooh.. so. many. feelings.
I'll write a review when I get my brain back.
but you sould just read it.

Now that I got my brain back, I figured I would try this again. Remember that my coherence is relative though.. :P

So, imagine that your parents are going on a space mission to populate another planet and they are taking you with them. You are going to be chriogenicaly frozen for 300 years and wake up when you are there. Something goes wrong though, and you wake up in the spaceship 50 years before your due date.
That is the gist of the story.

The world building is amazing, and there is not that much information dumping, since their whole world is the space ship.
What is interesting though, is how we get most of the information. As a teenager, when Amy agreed to this trip she was too depressed thinking about her frieds and boyfried to actually think about the logistics of their travel.
Turns out that the ship works as a small town, they have farms, a little downtown, where artisans are, a hospital, a library and then the actual command center of the ship.
If you don't work for them, you just work and take care of your life for generations, since families are suppose to populate the ship for 300 years.
I dont need to say that the plot is fantastic, so rich and interesting.

The pacing is just right, because of the thriller aspect, (someone is defrosting people, for crying out loud!) the reader is kept on the edge of the sit the whole time!

The point of view which the story is told, is divided between Amy and Elder. Elder is the boy who found Amy and he is also the mayer/commander in training of the ship.

I love that POV aspect, you get to know both of them and their struggles so well. Amy is the new girl, who doesn't integrate and has to find out what is going on. Elder is the boy who want to help Amy out very badly, but still struggles with his position on the hierarchy.

The side characters are SO entertaining! I love everyone from the hospital, especially Harley.

Just go read it, it is awesome. ;*

This book was.... wow. I selected it as some sort of fiction prompt for Book Battle: November, but couldn’t make myself read it for most of the month. I then selected it again for Book Battle: December as a “Dual POV” prompt. I only finished this book due to wanting to earn points and being mildly interested in a few of the plot twists.

Some characters take a while to warm up to, but I found myself hating both Amy and Eldest the entire book. By the end of it, I was actually scoffing at how I had zero attachment to either of them and how much their actions astounded me.

Things that annoyed me the most, barring spoilers:

Amy is sixteen years old, yet she consistently refers to her father as “Daddy”. To me, that’s already strange, but I do know a couple people who called their fathers Daddy at an older age. Still, she doesn’t only address him as such, but refers to him as “my daddy” when talking to other people. Considering everyone else on the ship is only thinking about murdering or trying to sleep with her, it felt very uncomfortable because I kept imagining her as a small child (it certainly matched going off her tantrums and forgetfulness)

Elder.... I despise this character. He is nothing more than a Nice Guy tm who spends the entire book not thinking for himself. If he bothers to defy Eldest for one moment, it’s only because Amy told him to. Otherwise, he didn’t really do anything except try to or think about getting with Amy.

I was excited at the end to finally see Elder get the ending I thought he deserved, but that wildly swung into the most unrealistic endings I’d seen in some time. I don’t think I can make myself read more.

Pros: there were a couple twists I hadn’t been expecting. That is all.
