I received this audiobook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The story was cute and though repetitive you can see the love and time that goes into making a perfect luau for a family. The story reads like a song, which is heard as the melody plays in the background. In the end, the author provides definitions of terms mentioned throughout the story, as well as a little of the history of why these gatherings are so important to their culture. I like that this story can be read by people of all ages and helps them understand a little of the Hawaiian culture.

How I miss Hawaii!!!! Honestly, that is what I loved best about this book.
And I wish I had eaten poi when I was there.

my favorite part about this book, is that it has nothing to do with Disney's definition of Ohana, nothing against the company... But this book honors Hawaiian culture wholly.

Lyrical book about the making of poi and its importance at Hawaiian luaus. Love the after notes. Beautiful illustrations and written words introduce my children to an important part of Hawaiian life.

I visited Hawaii recently for the first time and learning about Polynesian culture and Hawaii history and traditions was one of my favorite aspects of visiting. I went to a luau and I tried poi. I saw the taro growing in the wild and heard the story about it. I loved how this book incorporated so much of that and the interconnectedness of nature and people in poetic verses that build upon the story with each page. It incorporates colorful illustrations and the audio helps to hear the pronunciations. A helpful glossary is provided in the back as well. Educational and beautiful book.

Written in the style of "The House that Jack Built", 'Ohana Means Family traces the making of poi for an 'ohana's lu'au back to the land, rain, and sun, and people whose combined forces helped the kalo plant to grow. The text flows really well.
