Maybe I wouldn't mind the author a pompous annoying moron if I weren't in medicine. He tells of the quintessential know-it-all resident comments that can cause problems in medicine. I don't mind if you don't know the answer, just say that and go find the answer.

The title did not lie. while most of this book is fairly light hearted and just a bit uncomfortable, certain diary entries, and most noteably the Aftermath and Afterword were gut wrenching and heart breaking.

While I have always had massive amounts of respect for the NHS and how much they help everyone, that respect at least tripled reading this.

It is so easy to assume that once these lovely people have finished their shift they're perfectly happy and comfortable at home, but this book just goes to show that the shift never leaves you. It really reminds you to not take what we have for granted, and to respect and show gratitude to everyone willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect the lives of others.

I’ve really been getting deep into some memoir / nonfiction since I started listening to audiobooks, and this one, read by the author, was a great choice.

Kay tells us that the book has been compiled from his journal entries from the time he was training to be a doctor, through to his very early retirement from the profession due to burnout and stress. I really enjoyed this format, as it’s presented as a series of anecdotes, but each one ends with a punchline; sometimes hilariously witty and biting, other times sad. A particular favourite of mine was the story of a patient who said condoms didn’t fit him properly, and it turned out he was trying to pull them over his testicles as well
