This graphic novel was an absolutely beautiful and brilliant way to explain culture, especially in immigrant families where there may be a disconnect in language/experiences, sexuality, and the feelings of coming of age! I absolutely love and recommend and especially enjoyed the
Vietnamese rendition of fairy tales and truly loved the quote from Tiến’s auntie “It’s an old, old story. Details change. Things change. And now this story is ours. Yours and mine”.
It’s a prime and magnificent example of
how literature and storytelling should be, something for everyone!

Such a nostalgic book. Growing up, I had watched and heard renditions of  Tấm Cám . This is definitely a different version from what I have heard and watched before in my childhood, but has that same element of gore in the end that Disney would not approve of. I found it warm how Helen changed the ending of The Little Mermaid to segue into showing Tiến how she supports and loves him. I love the áo dài  in Tấm Cám. Represent!!
