What an absolutely perfect sequel. I had very little expectations for this book. I loved the first one and was looking forward to the second, but when I found out Isi wouldn’t be the main character I was disappointed. I thought it would be just trying to milk the first one story and would be about characters I didn’t care about. Boy was I wrong. While simple, this was such a lovely story of friendship and grief and strength and love. I am so thoroughly pleased. Not only was the story beautiful but it also was written so well. Hale truly has a beautiful talent.

A companion book to The Goose Girl. This one features Isi's friend Enna, who learns to talk to fire after her brother dies - to her detriment. I did not enjoy when Enna was a prisoner, but otherwise, it was a good book.

Equally as lovely as The Goose Girl but with a strikingly different heroine and journey which she undertakes. Wonderful fantasy.

I loved Enna Burning. It is very different from the Goose Girl, but still fit perfectly in the same world. Enna is much less passive than Isi, but she also does not have the external continuous threat of death to hide her identity. I mean, she kind of does, but the circumstances are different. I loved Enna's character arc, and Isi also has a character arc for good measure.

The plotline of the war was really will done. Enna's relationship with Captain Sileph was one of the creepiest and most seductive relationships I've read. It was very off-putting but had an appeal to it that made it believable. Really, really interesting and played into the themes and Enna's arc really well. Sileph is very memorable. I liked the supporting characters as well, especially Finn.

I really like how this book continued the story from the Goose Girl. It really did expand the world and the stakes and was not a retread of the first story. So good!

For my reading challenge, this is the book that made me cry. It's not a sad book, but I think my hormones were a little out of whack and I got a little misty eyed and brooding about how terrible war is.

Aside from that, this story is quite a bit of fun! I'm definitely a fan of Shannon Hale, and I was glad to connect some of the dots in this series. (I didn't know it was a series but accidentally read book one and then book four. Numbers on the cover would sure help!) Enna has been my favorite character in the three books I've read so far, so I was excited this one was focused on her. :)
