Somehow the sequel to The Poppy War surpassed it. Somehow it got darker, I didn't know it was possible. The hopelessness is truly incredible here, and the story really makes you want some of the characters to suffer horrifically. I think the third and final book might give this guess a fantastic payoff.

ho fatto molta fatica a finirlo ( 23 giorni!)nonostante ci siano dei pezzi che mi hanno interessato dalla seconda parte. Le prime 300 pagine sono lente, ripetitive e piuttosto noiose, poi la situazione ha iniziato a migliorare. Credo, però, che il problema maggiore è che continuo a non sentire alcuna empatia con la protagonista che non ha una "forma" nonostante sia l'eroina e anche l'antieroina del romanzo e possa avere una grande potenzialità proprio per le sue contraddizioni. Concluderò la trilogia per pura curiosità ma senza entusiasmo.

The second installment in the series takes a look at how our main character Rin navigates personal relationships along with battling her own inner demons. The book is good and is better written than the first book but sometimes is predicable. Other side characters are not fleshed out and are often left behind. Interesting characters from the first book get low page-time (screen time?) and are not developed. Almost seems as if you read the first book and stopped there you would be fine. I still like how RF Kuang ties historical elements and fantasy together.
