I did not hate it but I was also not a fan (!).
Homegirl had me cackling every now and then but it was more of a dreadful read, rather than an entertaining/ interesting one.

I’m a fan is probably the most accurate description of what it is to be a young woman in our time. The narrator, a Londoner in her thirties, is obsessed with an influencer. She follows her life with mixed feelings, altering fascination for her lifestyle and anger towards her careless wealth. She is also obsessed with a man, that she ironically called “the man I want to be with”. He is married, older and has shameless affairs with many other women. He is the worst boyfriend you could ever dream of, she knows it but still wants to be with him because he represents everything that she could ever dream about. I’m a fan highlights the contradictions of femininity on social media, wanting to be cool, cultivated and independent while following the guidelines of famous influencers. It’s also a statement on male toxicity and how women are attracted to something they all despise. In a time where para social relationships are deeply rooted in pop culture, I’m a fan truly feels like a necessary statement.

3.5 stars | I read this book after hearing it recommended on the Literary Friction podcast. They lauded this as an impressive take on the genre that has gained massive popularity in the last few years, and I agree. I cringed through the whole novel but couldn't put it down. It reminded me of No One Is Talking About This and Fake Accounts.

Such an Interesting depiction of obsession and the importance bestowed upon romantic relationships in our society.
'The world is built for couples. Even unhappy ones.'
'We are all sacrificed at the altar of his fear'
