This Japanese folk tale was fairly familiar to me, but it was a pleasure to read an expanded version of it and then to discover in the afterword that Gaiman was a bit freaked out to see how close the story fit in with his Sandman series. Though sometimes rather dark (in coloring), the art had much going on in it, and my favorite page was a hitherto uncharacteristic burst of colorful birds, reminding me of a [a:Walter Inglis Anderson|20542|Walter Inglis Anderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1400347474p2/20542.jpg] (a favorite artist of mine).

A really beautiful book with an intriguing tale inspired by Japanese mythology, yet didn't cut as deep as some other Gaiman books have.

Excellent Gaiman and excellent Sandman. The illustrations are as beautiful as the prose. After reading the story I flipped thru it again just looking at the illustrations. Wonderful.
Be sure to read the piece at the end wherein Gaiman discusses the origin of the story. Makes one wonder about the provenance of any story.
After finishing this I started on the P. Craig Russell version. Should make for an interesting comparison between illustrated novel vs. graphic novel.

Gaiman's prose is always a joy to read and Russell's images are always a joy to behold. 'Nuff said!
If you read the previous illustrated version you should read this one as well. If you haven't read the previous illustrated version than you should. Comparing the two takes on the same story gives a deeper look at both.
And if you read the afterward on the illustrated version you must read the afterword on this! 10 year old confessions should not be ignored.
