Save yourself and read The Boy in Striped Pyjamas instead. This book made me want to gouge my eyes out, from the sheer lack of history and the author hitting me over the head with the romance.

took me forever but i finally finished. i really loved the start of this book, but the further along i got i kinda started to get bored with it. i really loved reading a WW2 book that was from the side of Hitler supporters. this book started of so strong i just wish the 60% mark wasnt so boring.

Really not my usual fare. But some interesting perspectives into the lives of middle class Germans during and after the war.

This was a fairly easy read, somewhat of a romantic drama against the backdrop of the last years of WWII and afterwards. I liked reading from the P.O.V. of a German, non-Jewish civilian during that time period, and how the American occupation impacted people after the end of the war, but for a story about love and relationships I didn't feel emotionally connected for some reason. I might be getting too cynical these days but this was certainly no The Bronze Horseman (haha)! But seriously, to me it was good, not great. Lotte was a strong, resilient and often (but not always) independent character which I also liked by the way, and there is no doubt that there will be plenty of people who will enjoy, and have already enjoyed, this book.
