My fave Alyssa Sheinmel book so far. Amazing storyteller, complex characters—couldn’t put it down!

Thanks, I hate it.
A Danger to Herself and Others is sold to you as a mystery thriller, but really is more of a sad excuse for a mental health contemporary.
Because the mental health rep in this? Atrocious on all fronts, and going off the authors note at the end about 'creative liberty', she was fully aware. In 336 pages, she managed to absolutely butcher psychosis, practically every eating disorder under the sun, what involuntary commitment entails, what talk therapy is, how meds work, and the list. goes. on.
This is one of those books that really did not need to be published - it didn't accomplish what it set out to do in any way, wildly adds to stigma, and is geared towards young adults. Just, why. This was so unnecessarily shitty.
If you're looking for a good psychological thriller, this one is not it. If you want to read accurate representations of mental illness, you can keep looking too. Basically, my advice would be to just skip this one. I was actually kind of surprised it added up to two stars instead of one.

Hannah Gold has an amazing story. I felt for her struggle and the way she was treated, the way her brain tricked her. It started as a thriller and then went really sad. I love it, I love Hannah and Lucy, real or not.
