My first go at Maggie O'Farrell! I eventually found most of the characters compelling and became invested in the story, but my god is it a slow start! I was close to putting it down for the first half. Nonetheless, O'Farrell is a great writer and I'm keen to try a different book of hers.

Maggie!!!! Always ripping my heart out with the most beautiful and original prose. I had been in a real reading slump until I picked this up and I tore through it. So beautifully woven together, a genuinely shocking plot twist, and characters you fall deeply for. Highly recommend

Spoiler I knew pretty early on that Ted was going to be Lexie’s son but I was not expecting the emotional gutting of Innes dying so early on and when it was revealed that Margot was the woman he thought was his mother I actually gasped.

side note: i’m pretty sure this is what TJR *thought* she was doing with Evelyn Hugo but she didn’t even come close to achieving
