This book and I got off on the wrong foot from the beginning with a wholly unnecessary romance included from the start of the book, and for me, it didn't improve from there. Pitched as two stories, the focus of the plot seemed to always be on the wrong thing making it hard to read. While I know the Alex Cross series is popular, I think this will be the last for me for a while.

I have not been reading these books in order, so it’s really hard for me to reconciles this Christine with future Christine. Three stars for the general plot. The second half was very ehh.

Cat & Mouse felt very much like two separate stories forced into the same book, and it didn’t quite work for me. The first half provides a conclusion to the Gary Soneji story that began in the first Alex Cross novel, Along Came a Spider. While I appreciated a conclusion to the character’s storyline, I felt both Soneji and Cross fell a little flat as characters. I stuck with the book hoping that the second half, which follows an elusive murderer known as Mr. Smith, would improve upon the earlier parts of the book. While Mr. Smith was an intriguing villain, I found there to be too much of a disconnect between the first and second half of the book and was disappointed with the convenient, simplified revelations/twists in this story. I ended up skimming most of the last act. Here’s to hoping for a better experience with the next Alex Cross novel!
