The Tesla Legacy is the second book in Rebecca Cantrell’s Joe Tesla series, and it is a great follow-up to the first! I was eager to dive back into the world under the streets of New York City and find out what was in store for our protagonist, Joe Tesla, and his service dog Edison. Joe is still suffering from the inexplicable agoraphobia described in the first book, and he soon encounters new challenges when his father dies and he is unable to attend the funeral. We learn more about Joe’s past (his conflicted relationship with his father, his life growing up in the circus), and then events rapidly veer out of control when his mother passes on a suitcase with items his father wanted him to have. Rebecca Cantrell has given us another incredibly entertaining book! And I simply love Edison… how could you not? I was happy to see that there are hints of what we might find out next in future books, so fingers crossed the months will pass quickly until we can welcome the next book in the series!

Can't Get Enough Joe!

TBH, I’m already a huge Joe Tesla fan. That being said, Rebecca Cantrell doesn't disappoint in her second novel, THE TESLA LEGACY. With the death of Joe’s father, Rebecca effortlessly weaves multiple storylines together as she lays out a whole new meaning for Joe and his four-legged sidekick, Edison. I loved delving even deeper into Joe’s character and peeking into his past whilst accompanying him on a thrilling race save New York as we know it.

I know I keep talking, Joe, Joe, Joe, but he’s obviously not the only character in the book (otherwise, as much as I love Joe, it’d get pretty darn boring.) Love/hate his new antagonists. Rebecca makes you just want to jump into the pages and help stop them yourself.

Emotionally, Rebecca Cantrell took me to a place I’ve never been (& I can’t say more as I don’t want to reveal that part of Joe’s story.) By the end of the book I wanted to re-trace Joe’s footprints (& Edison’s paw prints) to explore their stomping grounds…can only imagine how much trouble I’d get into if I tried it in real life, however. Thankfully I have my copies of THE WORLD BENEATH and THE TESLA LEGACY to re-read when I get the itch to go exploring the underground world of Joe Tesla. How long do we need to wait until the next one??? Whenever it is, it can’t come fast enough!!!

Joe Tesla Series Book #2

It took me longer to get into this book, but it is still good. Following Joe and his side kick dog. Still love this dog! A little mystery and Joe dealing with some family history. Though I enjoyed the first book in the series more, this was a good read and I will look forward to the next book.

Plot

This is a very natural continuation to the previous novel in the series, with Joe trying to cope even further with the revelation of why he is agoraphobic, and new revelations about his familial connections. The discovery of a dangerous device, created by none other than Nikola Tesla himself really does drive this plot in a great way.

Characters

My love for Joe Tesla only grows within this book and I can't wait to read more of his adventures, or misadventures as they may be. His mind is truly an amazing thing, even as it turns against him in certain ways. There is more vulnerability for him within this novel, which only makes me care about him more, as though he is a real, live human being.

His enemies are twisted, almost more so than in the first novel. Ash is truly sinister, and a completely unreliable narrator, despite the reasons he gives for doing what he's doing.

Characters I would like to learn more about: Vivian

Tone and Setting

The tunnels and his new home seem almost like coming home as a reader, as we are given the opportunity to become more familiar with them. The tone of this novel is more sprawling, from fear, to almost abject terror at one point. It's a true mystery though.

Overall:

I've already got my hands on the second novel and I can't wait to read it. Rebecca Cantrell is a fantastic writer, one who knows how to do her research as well.

Star Rating: ★★★★☆

Not as good as the first book in the series. I was shocked to find out that Joe Tesla is not really a Tesla, but it didn't seem to affect Joe that much, which was strange. The plot itself had stretched my disbelief to a few breaking points, and I wished for more of Vivian. Still, Cantrell knows how to grab a reader, and once she does, she never lets go. In this respect this book is as good as its predecessor, making you shiver with suspense throughout. Moving on to the third book in the series, hope Cantrell is back to form in it.
