exactly how is this different from commercial fiction.... ?? it delivers the same thrills, same form of titillating entertainment. it's not badly written I just resent that this was sold to me as groundbreaking political fiction in the vein of 1984 or whatever when it's not :/

Did you ever read 1984 and think to yourself, "I love that everything is dismal and hopeless, but could we make it even more awful for women specifically?" If so, this is the book for you.

I'm glad I read it, but I don't think I'll be re-reading it. I had to read another book halfway through just to get out of Gilead.

Spoiler
Are there extremists, religious/political/both who would welcome a society like the one depicted in this story? Who would welcome Sharia or something like it? People who are insecure, frightened, who aren't capable of tolerating differences?

The prose is sleek at times, poetic at others. It really seemed like the kind of narrative that someone might tell; someone who had been traumatized almost to the brink of insanity or suicide.
