This book was short but better than I was expecting. I really liked the relationship between Flynn and Laurel and I loved how nothing went bad like normal romance novels.

This one is about a guy named Flynn who introduces Laurel to some kinky role playing (mainly rough sex and consensual rape roleplay).

It was an okay book. The thing that stood out the most and was my favorite thing was Flynn’s dirty talk and the sex scenes were pretty hot. He’s a dirty boy in the best of ways. ;)

However, it’s a very short book (160 pages), so character and relationship building was minimal. This would be fine in some cases since it’s an erotica anyways, but it still felt a little lacking to me.

The biggest issue I had though was the writing style and dialog felt a little stilted and unnatural to me. These two didn’t feel warm and real, more like just words on a page. The most passion I’m their voices was during the sex scenes. Other than those, their interactions seemed sweet, but not very naturally developed.

I’m not sure if I’ll read the next book. Perhaps, but I’m moving on for now.

Read because I also read Asking for It by Lilah Pace earlier this year and heard this was a better exploration of the topic. In some sense this is true: both the characters are regular people who just happen to share a darkish kink. They negotiate and take responsibility for each other in a way I really did appreciate. Unfortunately I found the book repetitive and boring, and it also had a number of unquestioned ableist and fat phobic lines that, while very much a part of the times, made it unpleasant to read. (Unsurprisingly, she drinks to deal with her depression.) It's also somewhat gender essentialist and keeps repeating how very masculine the fighter hero is and how the heroine yearns to femininely take care of him.

The description of the book makes it seem darker than it really is. Of course the exploration of a taboo kink (rape fantasy) is dark but outside of those scenes the main characters are pretty normal. That's probably why I enjoyed the book so much, the author knows how to balance those two sides.

Holy smokes Batman. I'm going to need a little time to calm down. I asked for a romance recommendation as a distraction from my mounting anxiety this week, and boy did this come through. Phew.

Flynn. I love you babe.

Hot hot hot! I really enjoyed the voices of both of these characters. The author did a great job building them, and I was even surprised by some heavy emotions from the heroine that felt very natural. I will admit that I skipped the parts about
Spoilerhim having sex with other women especially in front of her
. But after that, it was erotic and wonderful between the two of them! I'm definitely going to check out more from this author.
