A solid Victorian lit mystery - and this coming from someone who doesn't typically go in for either. Funny! The characters are great, and I really enjoyed the POV/structure of it all being diaries, letters, etc.

I recommend this despite the racist undercurrents. It certainly could have been worse but obviously that doesn't excuse it. It's one of those that thinks it isn't but had so much internalized that it still is... Y'know?

Despite being a classic, at points it really feels quite modern. Several points of view are utilised, threads are woven neatly.

Of course due to its age, some things can be a little politically incorrect at times, go into it with this in mind.

It took me really really long into the book to actually start enjoying it. But then I really did enjoy it
