From the first 50 pages or so I could not have guessed where the book was going. Big fan of that!! Kinda wished the direction came a little sooner and the backstory about their
mom and her manipulation
happened sooner. It felt off when it seemed like the author was villainizing the revolutionaries fighting for a free, independent Puerto Rico??? I think that started to reconcile though when stuff came out about the mother and they were making her a villain for abandoning and manipulating the family. Upon reflection I can see how it (the mothers manipulation) was there the whole time I just didn’t want to believe it since I liked her idealism. I REALLY liked how the characters were so flawed and she didn’t try to hide it, just made it so you loved them anyways. I kind of think the book was written for people older than me…some of the stuff just felt very Gen X/Millenial.

Complicated feelings here. The narrators were great and I enjoyed the writing and characters. The complex plot was intriguing, but it did feel like there were so many elements here that they might not have all gotten their due? I think the first 75% had me and the ending was then rushed. But overall I'm excited to read more from this author.
