Excellent book.

Investing is a skill and Marks describes how successful investors should think.

Leave stock picking to the professionals, but if you must, read this book first. Hopefully it convinces you otherwise.

Marks created a book around memos he's written over the years that read like some mutual fund annual report management letters I recall: pithy, insightful, and obvious. I didn't learn anything new.

Paraphrasing...great companies bought at the wrong prices can be lousy investments. Less good assets bought at great prices, such as a run down house in a great location, can be great investments.

Risk isn't volatility. Volatility is how money is made in the stock market.

Trees don't grow to the sky - no investment will continue to increase in price unabated.

I would say that "The Most Important Thing" is the most important investing book of recent times. In this book, Howard Marks discusses what the most important things are for an investor. The chapters on risk are in itself brilliant. Most of the 20 chapters are born out of the memos that he regularly writes, but his insights on the various aspects of investing are very thought provoking. It will help an investor to develop his investment philosophy and get in the right frame of mind.

I had the older version of the book. Now I'm ordering the new one (Illuminated edition) to check the additional thoughts of the other value investors.

I never read books that are non-fiction and explain things to you (unless it is for school), but I found this book charmed me in a way that is hard to express.

This book explains to you thoughtful ways to invest, and how not to make mistakes when investing. While I found most of them to be quite obvious, when you put them all together it makes a lot of sense. It is very useful to use when you need help with money, and has made me think over my investments and where I spend my money during my schooling years.

A friend of mine who is studying Business also gave me lots of insight by telling me how true this book is, and coming from Columbia Business School (the "best" school for business, her words) that this book will be a good reference for future investments.

Overall, it was very helpful and thoughtful! Although it will not get me hooked on reading books related to business and how to make money or spend your money, I did enjoy the information I gained from it!

Four stars out of five.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
