Evermore: The Immortals, by Alyson Noël

A little sappier than Twilight, but a neat premise -- I really enjoyed the mind-reading and Ever's ability to read a whole book by touching it; to answer a test question by running her hands on the problem. That was cool. The dead sister visits were interesting as well as her character being so far into grief that she has given up her whole trendy, popular girl image for one of an emo goth-type. The plot loses steam at the end and the love story is very teen, but it was fun to read.

Plot Summary
After the car crash that killed her entire family and nearly killed her, Ever Bloom is able to read people's thoughts, see their auras, and know their whole life story just by touching them. She works hard to avoid other people and suppress her abilities, but when she meets Damen, everything changes. He has no aura, and his mind is a blank to her. As Ever grows closer to Damen, she finds she has more questions than answers about Damen's strange abilities.

Critical Evaluation
Evermore seems highly derivative of the Twilight phenomenon. Damen, like the vampire Edward, affects Ever strongly, and his touch is like no one else's. Damen has lightning-fast reflexes and has to deal with an unnaturally prolonged life, and it seems unclear why Ever affects him so strongly. But Noel's book succeeds in developing strong relationships between Ever and the people in her life, and it's refreshing to read a paranormal romance where the love interest isn't the sole focus of the protagonist's life (although it is still what the book spends the majority of its time on, sadly). While it will never be mistaken for an intellectual novel, Evermore will appeal to readers who loved Twilight and can't get enough of paranormal romance.

I've been desperate. Like seriously desperate for a good book. And that is precisely why I read, and FINISHED this book. And the series for that matter. But seriously, this may be one of the dumbest paranormal books I've read.
Let's start with how cliche Ever is. She's the loser, outcast, and all that jazz. But she's totally normal underneath that sweatshirt and sunglasses right?!? Oh, ya...except she can read minds and see auras. But other than that, there's nothing that sets her apart from any other character in any other typical YA paranormal romance. She's pretty, but you wouldn't know it. She's funny, but you wouldn't know it. She's an unappreciative orphan. Every freaking thing about her has been said and done before. And the same goes for every other character in this book. Daemon could be any typical YA guy. Rich, immortal, sexy, and extremely attractive. All other characters aren't worth mentioning because they receive no character development whatsoever.

As for the plot, there was nothing at all happening. I mean seriously, it's entirely about how cute Daemon is, and Ever is not going to think about that, and he likes the uber popular girl, and he's so perfect, and blah blah blah blah. Boring, cliche, and basically the plot of every single paranormal book in the world.

Please take this review as a nostalgic comfort book. I read it when I was 14 or 15 and was in love. It’s trash, but it’s my trash

I only bought Evermore because I had won a box of books from our local library and one of the books was Blue Moon (book #2) and it’s description had me really intrigued and I was itching to read it. Who could possibly read book two without reading the first…
While I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of Evermore, the ending left me with a lack of “wanting more”. It also has me wondering what could possibly happen to in the next book (not to mention the rest of the series) to keep me intrigued.

Before I say anything else, let me say that Mallory really loved this book - sometimes he nuzzles the edges to give a book his scent but I've never seen him actually lick pages before! So if your criteria for a book is one that a cat would literally love to eat, this is the one you want.

However, if you want a human's opinion, well, I thought it was good but not quite that good.

It's always difficult to know what an author has read before starting the writing process, whether they've deliberately taken things from previous reads/genres or if it's unconscious or if they've ever read what to the reader is a clear influence. I read what felt like a mash-up of the whole Twilight/Fallen genre, with the strong "girl with serious secret/problem starting over at a new school" overlay. There were tinges of If I Stay, Narnia/The Magicians and another book I know I'll remember the title of the minute I "publish" this. Summerland? My immediate thought was Michael Chabon's book. That's not to say that this Immortals series isn't a good one, it's to say I didn't find it terribly original.

One of the bits that irritated me the most was the whole "if this were a book then [whatever:] but this is real life" thing. I hate it when books do that - be they fantasy, mystery, sci-fi, etc.. Whomever started that should be sentenced to Death by Paper Cut.

Unfortunately, Ms. Noel's plans for the series, and this book, mean that the book went in a different direction than the one I'd hoped. It would have been a wonderful stand alone book - original, even - if the focus had been completely on Ever, her coming to grips with her new ability, her dead family and the fact that her younger sister Riley was hanging out and completely doing away with Damen and Drina. That's a story I would have given 4 or 5 stars to (I tend not to actually eat the books I like, not being a cat).

I think the hardest thing for me about this book was the fact that 905 of the time, we had no idea what exactly was going on. Also, that for 90% of the book, it was plainly obvious that the main love interest for our heroine was completely lying to her. Despite this, the suspense was interesting. By the end, I just wanted to know what was going on so I could walk away with a sense of completion.

My favorite thing about this book was the sibling relationship between the main character and her sister. Reminded me of my sister and made me a bit nostalgic.

It was an amazing book. I would give it 5 stars, but Alyson Noel didn't use good word choice. She repeated words and phrases over and over again, such as "The truth is..." Other than that one little quirk, it was so good and I wouldn't mind reading it again!
