This book really opened my eyes to what I’ve been dealing with and provided some useful advice for getting myself out of the situation I’m in.

I highly recommend reading this if you even remotely suspect this maybe could apply to one or more of the people in your life.

This book is fantastic, 100% practical and hands-on from page 1, and isn't just for parent-adult child relationships. It is applicable to any adult relationship where something feels "off" or "missing" in your emotional connection. There are tons of real-life examples and descriptions to help you recognize emotional immaturity(and maturity!) in its many forms. Besides that, the "what to do about it" is straightforward.

While I was reading, I couldn't help but recognize abusive pastor-congregation relationships. The book is absolutely not about that and is not about group dynamics, but some descriptions made my eyes pop. I would like to read a book like this one but about group emotional control.

I was underwhelmed by this book and thrown off by the sanist language and lack of nuance over mental illness. a harmful or abusive parent is not made less so by their struggles, but the way in which we talk about them (and their mental health, if applicable) deserves accuracy. i feel greatly less interested in what could be helpful parts of the book, and tend to feel that weaponizing heavily stigmatized language cheapens the better points of what someone says.. not to mention the continued conflation of mentally ill folks as dangerous or harmful that helps no one. i was disappointed but there is knowledge to glean for the right person- ymmv.

I've been trying to read up more on child psychology recently, by some blessing of the cosmos I happened to acquire a copy of this book. To an extent, most people are aware that a hard childhood creates difficulties in the adult lifestyle. This book in particular addresses the hows, whys and what you can do to reaffirm your place in the world as an individual. A wonderful piece of work with very nice tools in order to make understanding your childhood environment easier. I'd say the only thing that this book lacks is cultural diversity (but, in all honesty, the globalized world that children grow up in sort of negates the perceptual differences in relation to cultural habits to an extent).
