Libby audio. Narrated by the author. She does a good job narrating, especially for not being voice trained. Damn. This woman is fast.

This is a phenomenal sports memoir — one of my absolute favorites. Definitely intended for runner readers (otherwise some anecdotes might go over your head), this book gives a rare glimpse into the honest, inner thoughts twirling around in an elite marathoner’s head every step of a race. Specifically the iconic Boston Marathon, what my dad calls “the Super Bowl of running.” I’m so thankful for Des’s reminder to “put the intrinsic pleasure of running front and center” and to remember “the right why” — the soul’s reasoning for pursuing this sport, regardless of performance outcomes. With the Boston Marathon just two weeks out, this was especially inspiring to read right now!

I feel like I could be friends with Des. She seems so normal. She's a crazy good runner but I feel like she's relatable.

Des is a personal hero of mine -- as she is for just about every distance runner. I've gotten to meet her a few times, and she's as charming and hilarious, but also as pointed and direct about her strongly held and hard-won positions, in these pages as she is in person.
Des IS the Boston Marathon, and the through-line for this memoir is her stunningly inspirational win at Boston 2018 amidst the absolute worst possible running conditions. I remember that April Monday morning like it was 10 minutes ago, scream-crying at my TV as Des cruised down Boylston, arms raised, nearly frozen solid. It was incredible.
And so is this book. Of course it is. Boston is the angle, but she has plenty of time here to discuss her whole career, her advocacy for clean sport, her dogs and her bourbon, and so much more. LOVED THIS BOOK!
