Compelling story, I especially enjoyed the descriptions of her time spent outside of the US. The chapter written about her time in Afghanistan was especially powerful for me. I could definitely tell she’s used to writing journalism pieces, some of the writing style didn’t emotionally compel me as much as I would have expected given the content it covers. But tells a very important story about children in immigrant families, what it feels like to straddle multiple worlds, dysfunctional family and grappling with

your queer identity with a mother who doesn’t accept that.

fellow year of the tiger girlies, how are we feeling after this brutal act of psychological warfare ?!????!?!

convinced every daughter that has a good relationship with their mother is lying because what do you mean 😐 how do you not constantly grapple with the need to flee the woman you came from while doing everything in your power to repay the love she has shown you 🤨

Cried way too hard at way too many moments in this book, but I loved it and I’m glad Put found, built, and kept a good home for herself <333

This book explores a lot of themes that I am very much interested in (clash between different cultures, mother/daughter relationship, intergenerational trauma, queer identity).

There were passages that really impressed me, where the author wove her words in such a beautiful way that I was really taken aback. 
However, there were some sections (especially in the middle part of the book) where I found the writing too much matter-of-fact, like it had lost 
its spark and effectiveness. 

Still, even if some chapters didn't capture me as much and fell a bit flat for me, the overall story was very moving and impactful.
