Nineteen Steps focuses on Nellie, a young woman living with her family in the Bethnal Green neighborhood of London during WW2. Nineteen steps refers to the steps down into an unused tube station where the family and village go during air raids. When tragedy hits the family must figure out how to move forward.

What I liked: It’s a short and easy read.

I liked the relationship of the siblings and next door neighbors. The neighborhood really comes together a few times.

What didn’t work for me: The writing felt very detached and juvenile. The author constantly is telling you but not showing you how things affected the characters.

The focus is mainly a PG romance between Nellie and an American. There’s also a bit of a love triangle which I didn’t love.

Billy is so over the top wholesome it made me roll my eyes a few times.

Who should read it: This is perfect for people dipping their toes into historical fiction, there’s a little history but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. If you like sweet no spice romances, give this a try.

Thank you @williammorrow for my gifted copy.

Dear Nineteen Steps,
I fell into the bookstagram gotta read it hype to check this one out. I did enjoy your story and your characters,  but you felt like a story I already knew. In all reality, you pretty much followed the story-line of the movie Armageddon. While I appreciate that you are a family story for Millie Bobby Brown, and part of her heritage, your love triangle felt overdone and predictable. That part of your story aside, I really loved the historical details about the bomb shelters during WWII and the corruption of the government and how many people they were willing to sacrifice. Your characters were interesting and I liked that they were based on real people as well. You were just a middle of the road story for me.
