I'm glad I learned about a part of history I didn't know about but dear Lord it was depressing. Like the tragedy wasn't enough let's add more.

This book was a fictional historical romance based on Millie Bobby Brown's family story. The focus is on Nellie, her family, and her love interests during World War 2. It was both a good and emotional read

An interesting story recalling the true events of a wartime tragedy. A typical family saga.
I did feel there was more sorry to tell, being only from one families perspective meant the lives of others who were also touched by the tragedy went left untold, and big swathes of story were left unfinished, But it was an enjoyable read nonetheless, if a little predictable.
A sanitised version of live in the east end during the war. It could have gone deeper, but didn’t really need to.
Praise to the writer, which wasn’t Millie.

This story follows Nellie an 18yr old lady working for the mayor in Bethnal Green 1943 and follows the next couple of years of her life, her friends and her family. This particular event during ww2 wasn’t one I had heard before and it really is a tragic and heartbreaking event. 173 lives were lost that night, 68 of which were only children. There were so many feelings when reading this, loss, hope, heartbreak, drama, emotion, fear, yearning and romance. There were a few times in this book that I shed tears. But none more so than the loss of those innocent lives .
Obviously having never lived through the war I can’t begin to imagine the horrors that those at the time went thru, but like Millie and many other youngsters today, my grandparents lived through the war, my grandma was 23 (1943) and was a land girl and she told similar stories.
There’s something about hearing war stories that gives my heart a tug and they all have the same things in common, love, hope and community and reading Nellie’s story you can feel that oozing off the pages.
I loved this story, it feels so wrong to say that when it’s set during a real period of our time, but I loved the romance the hope, the fight for the future and the outcome of Nellies journey.
