one thing about sally rooney is that she is never going to give you the ending you want

I'm kind of obsessed with the way she writes women and their bodies. Both Marianne and Frances have such ugly views of their bodies and abuse them to, I think, present a physical symptom of their emotional distress (not to say that their self harm and starvation is a performance of their mental suffering for other people! because I don't think it's that at all and that gets too close to “oh they’re just doing it for attention” which is just very reductive and harmful. it's more like a private expression) and they're obviously different characters but there were many times specifically when Frances was talking about her body that I was reminded of Marianne

While reading this book I was really torn between liking and hating it and I'm still not sure. It wasn't what I expected, I think. The main thing that threw me off was Frances herself. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't bring up any sympathy for her or relate to her in any way. I simply didn't like her, but then again I didn't like any character in this book, really, and it makes me wonder if it's meant to be that way or if I just don't like Sally Rooneys writing. Then the other thing that bothered me, that hasn't really gotten much to do with the actual book, that I still feel the need to mention is, how in the show Nick is played by no other than Joe Alwyn and maybe that's just me but I definitely wouldn't describe him as, and I quote: "Handsome to an almost off-putting extent" but since I already knew Joe Alwyin played Nick I couldn't even imagine him as someone else and it made me relate to Frances even less, because why would you sleep with a married man if he looks like Joe Alwyn?

I think it was just a story of repeated behaviours from all the main characters. There were sections of self development or self awareness with the intent to improve, but did any character actually develop ? In the end I didn’t even end up liking Bobbi or Frances or even Melissa. I’m not even sure I liked nick. A lot of loose ends at the end ? It’s  Like the author got bored, undid all the self-awareness and ended the book ?

I did like the relevant topics And The nod to endometriosis. However I Feel the author  glazed over a large amount of obvious body image issues and an eating disorder ?

First of all, this book had no quotations when characters were talking which was honestly very confusing. I never knew if it was all in the main character’s head or actual dialogue. The book seemed to have a lot of hype for something that was actually mid.
