Maybe I'm just a wimp, but I thought this book as a tad too intense to be chilfdren's lit.

A fun story of a thirteen-year-old girl's (mis)adventures at sea in 1832. Acclaimed children's author Avi nails the nineteenth-century setting and the nautical feel of this piece, and his plucky heroine comes across as a female version of Treasure Island's Jim Hawkins, holding her own against mutineers, storms, and other vagaries of shipboard life. I think I would have loved this even more when I was closer to Charlotte's age, but it's still pretty great to encounter as an adult reader.

Four enthusiastic stars because of the long history I have with this book. Charlotte Doyle was the improbable heroine of my middle school dreams. The idea of throwing off a mundane, privileged existence in order to embrace adventure and justice simply thrilled me.

At some point it was brought to my attention that this book is occasionally used by teachers to illustrate an "unreliable narrator." This revelation briefly burst my bubble, but I'm over it, and Charlotte has reemerged as one of my all-time favorite heroines, largely due to her improbability.

I just love books in this time period about being on the seas. Yes, it was a little cliche and on the nose at some points, Charlotte was a bit insufferable.  But I could look passed it for the writing style and the vibes.

Although a tad unrealistic, I didn't mind the adventures at all (even if I did think the grown men could use a pair of balls). But my favorite part was the last few chapters. That, and the appendix and the parts about seafaring makes this book a keeper in my library.
