"Life is horrible and unfair and terrifying. But those are not reasons to stop living."

Jasper saving Katherine's life and their subsequent correspondence via letters was a promising start.

However, the story quickly became less about them getting to know each other and more about them repeating the same thought patterns of "his first wife was perfect, he will never be able to love me" and "I killed my wife, I deserve to be miserable".

I found myself waiting for the added drama to drive their communication forward, as is often the case in romance. The story jumped four months ahead and the resolution therefore seemed rushed.

This book lands between two and three stars. I'm bumping it down due to the frequent weird usage of comma - it was recurringly added where it was not needed, for example on page 284: "Katherine’s hair hung in damp, strands about her waist and shoulders..." The book was otherwise well written, which makes these errors stand out.

What's charming about this book is how Jasper and Katherine just can't help being attracted to one another--not just physically, but to their shared reading tastes, their love of the country, and their innately appealing natures. I loved seeing them progress to their HEA, but I have to admit I wanted to bash Jasper over the head for most of the book.

Katherine was a great character, honest about herself (to the point of not seeing her own appeal to others) and able to make decisions when confronted with situations that needed to be addressed. At several points in For Love of the Duke, Katherine is the one to take action, to take charge of her life and move it in directions that she needs. I loved see her act rather than react.

I found Jasper's struggle over his wife and child to be a great one, but I would have liked to have seen a ready heir at least acknowledged. The fact is, death in childbirth was the #1 killer of women at this time, and many children didn't live through their first year. So having Jasper react in what to me seemed to be far more apropos of today's times without any acknowledgment of an existing heir was odd.

I read a paperback copy of this book that I picked up years ago at an RWA signing. I hope Caldwell has had the book edited since then, as there were a number of grammatical errors, especially misplaced commas, that were jarring as I read the story.

But overall, I had a wonderful time reading Katherine and Jasper's journey to love. Frankly put, Jasper lucked out, as Katherine is a wonderful heroine.

I.. don't know about this book. I did like it, but I did have some problems with it. For a woman who is a spit fire with the duke, she sure is the opposite with her sister and mother. Also, she claims to love the duke, to know the duke better than anyone. I just don't see it. They hardly talk, he yells and dashes whatever hopes and happiness she has at the time, but she still deeply cares for him? I don't think those actions should lead to love. And the idea he loves her back, that he cares for her sooo so much? I. Don't. See. It.

If you're going to have them fall in love, make it realistic.

Side note, I did catch quite a few grammar errors. Those bug me to death.

I picked up this book as a free ebook giveaway, and read it over the course of a book expo where I was able to meet the author herself. Both the book and the writer are filled with gracious kindness and heart. This tale is a sweet story of two people who were never looking to find the other, but finding just what they never knew they needed.

I think I had read this years ago and retained no memory of it. It is ok, the hero is not very forthcoming with information that the heroine really should know about (he then acts surprised that she cannot read his mind)

It's been a really long time since I've read a book in one day. Light, fluffy, made me laugh, made me cry. Great book in one of my favorite genres.

Moving and thoughtful, I enjoyed the H/h and characters. I will definitely check out more of Caldwell's books.
