I should probably give it four stars but I can't.

It was ok. There was a lot of hype about this book, so maybe my expectations were too high. Lots of adventure and very fast-paced (maybe a bit too fast). I really enjoyed the monsters and the fairytale storytelling through an Eastern European lense. I didn't enjoy the love interest (there wasn't much to make us like him), and I feel it made more sense for the love interest to be Kasia. The very fast pace made it difficult to process events or develop any sort of feelings about them before the next event unfolded.

read for the 2015 reading challenge: a book published this year

Holy shit, this book. This book. Unlike Temeraire which is great in terms of worldbuilding but which I found somewhat stiff and tedious to get into, Uprooted clicked with me right away. Maybe it was the more fairy tale-ish approach. Maybe it was because it fit so nicely with this plant witch aesthetic I aspire in every aspect of my life. Spoiler alert: it was both of these things, but also the voice of the narration.

I barely found something to complain about. The spell-based magic concept is more solid than the one in Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus although I wished we could've seen more of it, since the book dwelt more on the second, more intuitive magic approach which provided glorious metaphors... but metaphors and explanations are 2 different pair of shoes. The plot follows a similar concept like Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard Series: things keep on getting horribly worse until it appears that there is no way that all the conflicts can be resolved in a positive manner.

Uprooted has some flaws, but I was having such a good time reading it, that I honestly couldn't care less.

The concept behind this book is so good! A creepy forest as the main antagonist, a dragon (fair, that turned out to be a guy, but he's still called Dragon), some weird offering of a girl every 10 years. Yes please! I was reasonably pleased with the way it was executed too - I did enjoy this book, although I also had a few problems with it.

GOSH it was long. I don't actually think the book is longer than any other book I read, it just felt SOOO long. It jumps straight into the story from the first page, which I LOVED. But after the first chapter or so, the pace of the story slowed right down and started to drag. It didn't really pick up again until about 2/3 of the way through.

Also, the story felt like 2 books that had been put together. Half way through, and I mean exactly half way through, the book changed location and kind of changes the direction, and became more political and focused on the royal family. I didn't dislike it, but I was left just a little confused at the sudden change.

I was left a little disappointed by the ending regarding the romance aspect of the book. The conclusion of the Wood was AMAZING and perfectly done, but the ending didn't really conclude the romance at all, and I was left with a few questions. The romance was actually disappointing throughout the whole book. I felt like it was there, but also not there at the same time..?

Overall, the book is a good read. I enjoyed the plot and thought that was very well done. It tied in magic and politics, and the ending was especially very well thought out. The book just dragged a little in my opinion and I was disappointed by the (lack of?) romance.

I loved this! The world was so interesting, and the friendship between Agnieszka and Kasia was such a great part of the story.
