I think this is my favorite book in this series. Just the right amount of drama, action, and angst.

Getting to the heart of main plot arc, Daine and company head to Carthak in a last attempt to make peace. My issues with this series still remain unfortunately. Daine is too powerful and things come to her too easily to make her a very sympathetic character. Unlike the Alanna and PotS series, each book in the Immortals series takes place in a few days, even though there is about a year "time span" between each book. You never get the sense of the character aging and struggling with her talent.
Again, it's a quick read, so if you've already read the first two, you should definitely continue.

3.7 I like getting backstory on Dane's character but this is just not my favorite series by Ms. Pierce. I find the characters interesting but they lack the connection to the reader that you have with Alanna and Kel.
Note: This audio book version was much more enjoyable than the first in this series. I'm glad they stopped/decreased the weird echo microphone portions. I also liked knowing that the author was the narrator. I'd have been content with her reading the whole book but I'm sure that is time consuming.

This had a slightly rocky beginning, but overall I enjoyed it a lot. Though Tamora Pierce's fantasy worlds have many familiar trappings -- kings, mages, orientalism -- they also have so many aspects that are very weird in a delightful way. I love the inclusion of dinosaurs, and the rapid explanation of evolution via mage, within a world that contains basilisks, dragons, and other mythical monsters. I also like how Pierce doesn't discriminate between animals -- a bat or a hyena is just as much a good friend as a more traditionally likeable animal, such as a horse. I was also delighted by Zek, Daine's marmoset friend. These books are tremendously fun and full of the best escapism, as well as creating a lovely portrait of animals as individuals, with ideas, rights and opinions of their own.
