this might be the best book i’ve read this year! i finished it in two days (i’m a busy gal). i was wary of this book, considering it’s by murakami, but despite some freaky (ykwim) aspects, i really enjoyed the writing, and while i usually hate first person, it was perfectly applicable this time.

Like every other Murakami book, the surreal world-building is what makes the book so good.

aside from murakami's typical depictions of women, i'd say this book touched my heart quite a little. he describes loneliness and longing and memory so effortlessly. everything he touches feels like a dream.

i can see why storygraph recommended this to me so strongly

i found this much more pleasant to read than norwegian wood, at least. murakami says in the introduction that he had a good time writing it as well, which is nice to think about. no authors suffered in the writing of this book.

after reading it i had a lot of questions that i tried to find the answers for but it seems like murakami is inscrutable and things are generally left up to interpretation.

still, i think its a great story about loss, grief, and what could have been. also about love. id say the writing of lesbians was abit less ??? in this than it was in norwegian wood.

love me some magical surrealism

As far as I know, this is the only Murakami novel with queer representation, so that’s why I decided to give it a read.
The lesbian sexual content was definitely written for the male gaze, and it was mostly nonconsensual, which is problematic.
