I will be forever grateful to Stephen Sposato for recommending this gem of a book to me! A fascinating look at the life and work of one of my favorite artists. I loved reading her thoughts on two of my favorite topics - portraiture and family legacies.

A bit slow near the end with Mann’s often verbose writing style, but endlessly interesting and informative. So much depth and time is shown mostly into Sally Mann’s family history that it’s more so a memoir of family than a singular memoir, of that makes sense.
Still really well written and a very interesting and different kind of memoir. Definitely one of the best I’ve yet to read.

If this proves nothing else it proves that Mann does not learn from past mistakes.

Mann's memoir is gripping, some of the stories so harrowing I had trouble sleeping. But her courage and honesty in exploring the shadowy parts of life - death, in particular, but also the troubled history of the American South and her own family - and the process of creating art made this one of the best books I've read this year.
