“We go where you go, buddy,’ Rafa says. ‘That’s the way it’s always been, whether you like it or not.”

Okaaaaay!! The whole damn series was gooooodd! I really like all the characters ,like all of them even the shitty head Daniel. I liked the friendship ,siblings love and how they found families in each other. I love the plot twist and I hate the cliffhangers in the end of every book. Overall the whole series is amazing ,worth a read even though maybe you read other books about Fallen Angels and their children. I give the whole series a five star!!

You guys...just go read this.

Burn by Paula Weston is the final book in the Rephaim series and I have been waiting, waiting, waiting to get to read this book. I have loved it since Jaime told me about Shadows, book one. If you haven’t started this series (WHAT??) go get Shadows now. Then pick up the other three so you can read all of them back to back. For those that have not yet read this book, or potentially any of the others, you may not want to continue reading this review. I am going to do my best to not spoil anything but can’t promise anything.

Gaby’s story has been developed so well over the course of the first three books and diving into Burn, I was immediately pulled back into her world. I thought the way that Weston structured the story was perfect. Sometimes I struggle with the flipping back and forth in timelines only because tend to get invested in the timeline I’m reading and all of a sudden I have to adjust to another timeline. I didn’t find this to be a problem for me in Burn. Right from page one, Weston delivers a mix of the current state as well as all the backstory we were missing because Gabe was missing them so as it all comes back to her, we get to find out ALL THE THINGS!! No
I’m not telling you what but trust me, it was well worth the wait.

In this book we get the usual cast of characters – Rafa, Jude, Jason, Daisy, Maggie, Daniel, Nathaniel, and demons. There are a bunch more but I can’t list them all here. One of the things I have been waiting for throughout this series is more information and interaction with Semyaza and the rest of the fallen angels. The story comes together completely and we find out what Nathaniel was thinking when he did what he did and how they all ended up where they are in this book.

Since this is the final book I can’t say much about what actually happens but I will say that the growth I saw in all of the characters was fantastic. Gaby and Jude / Gaby and Rafa didn’t go back to hating each other when everything came back to them which I was super happy about. As Gaby realizes who she was when she was Gabe, she makes the decision to not be the person she was back then. Don’t get me wrong, she is still tough and smart and cares a lot about the people around her but she comes to realize her pride isn’t worth giving up her friends and family.

A good portion of this book, outside of the relationships, is the group preparing for the impending demon attack at Pan Beach. There is a ton of action and eventually fighting and I loved every minute of it.

While all the other books tended to leave me on a cliff at the end, this one wrapped everything up fantastically. All of the questions I had were answered and I had plenty of Gaby and Rafa swoons. I can’t say much else without potentially ruining everything but what I will say is that Weston did a wonderful job of keeping me interested in the series from the start of Shadows. I am absolutely going to be looking forward to what Weston writes next. If you like a story that includes mystery, fallen angels, swoons, friendships, and just a fantastic story, you should pick this series up immediately.

Book #64 Read in 2016
Burn by Paula Weston

I did not realize that this was the fourth book in a YA paranormal series but there was enough background given and the book was well written enough that I did not feel as if I was missing anything. That being said, I will go back and read the first three books in this series. In this book, the last book, twins Gabe and Jude, half-human/half-angel, want to release the Fallen (their angelic fathers). Their memories, wiped away for the last year, come back to them and the two bring their fighting factions together for one hell of a battle. This book has action, romance, mystery and humor. A good series for high school readers and adults alike. I received a copy of this book from Amazon Vine in exchange for a honest review.

In case you missed it, Burn, the last of The Rephaim series, came out yesterday (in ANZ)!

Which means it's time for a family portrait. Ain't they a picture?

This was definitely the best book of the series. Toward the end I didn't want to stop reading even. There's tons of actions, so many things revealed and great new characters. I was very satisfied with this ending.

With the last book ending with Gaby and Jude getting their memories back, a lot of the beginning of this book is flashbacks. We find out what happened to split the Rephaim, and why Gaby didn't go with her brother. Yes, it was pretty stupid reason, but I was not surprised by it...I actually partially guessed it correct.
SpoilerI figured it had to do with Rafa and I was sure he was in love with her. I just thought she didn't take finding that out in the best way or something. What I didn't guess was that it was also because he slept with Mya mere hours before he did Gaby. And that that would just blow her fuse completely.
. We also find out what happened when Jude and Gaby finally reconnected the year before. I liked these flashbacks because they gave us good insight into what led up to all of this. Even if we were still left with questions.

Gaby struggles to fit her new self with her old self for a little while. There's no denying that this past year has changed her. She also doesn't know what she should feel for Rafa. But the imminent threat to Pan Beach comes first and she has to pull herself together. They need a good plan and unfortunately, it's the Butlers that come up with one. But while discussing what to do about the coming fight and about Mya, it has to come out that Jude and Gaby remember everything. Which might have been okay if they don't also have to admit to what they were doing when they disappeared. It gives the Rephaim that came with them much to think about before they follow the two of them into battle. Much to Gaby's relief, they all come back to fight with them. And at this point her and Rafa are officially together giving her more reason to succeed.

The battle turns out to be more horrific than Gaby could have ever predicted with more demons there than she has ever seen or thought to in one place. The Rephaim are overwhelmed, but eventually they get help. It doesn't really turn the tide, but it does give Gaby and Jude the chance to try to free the fallen again. Who are awesome by the way. That does put the advantage to them and they even manage to kill a gatekeeper. To say the Fallen are angry with Nathaniel would be an understatement. Especially when we learn what they did and what he did with the information. With the appearance of Michael, Nathaniel's world pretty much collapses when he learns that everything he has done since being allowed to be free was not the mandate of heaven and has been wrong. Michael doesn't just appear to stop Nathaniel's death though, but to make the Rephaim and the Fallen come together and prepare for the real war against hell that is coming. With Michael around we learn even more about what happened to Jude and Gaby last year, why they were saved, and other things as well. It's definitely awkward for many of the Rephaim to be living with the Fallen, but I did so love to see how their fathers acted with them.

The end was good and I liked it. But it did end in a way that could even have more after it. If that happens, I would definitely want to check it out.

3rd Reading (2021):
It was a fun read all the way to the end. I might have rated a four star this time around but I'm not sure that I'd like to change anything from the first time I read it.

---------------------------------------------------

1st Reading (2014):
A fantastic end to this series, keeping true to its characters and its customary twists and turns. I love the mystery, energy and plot line of htis whole series and am a little sad its over.

Paula Weston did an amazing job :)
