Love the way she writes mysteries maybe it makes me sound stupid but i love when things wrap up in a way you’d never guess , not every loose end is tied but the ones that are you’d never expect :) Very fun book and made me think too much about the passage of time so I’m sad now :)

"This plot feels auspicious, not like a place he's seen before but a place he's always meant to see. What is the opposite memory? What is the inverse of an echo?"
5 shining gold stars. I adore this book.
As a reader, I am immediately drawn to any story that includes a "house is also a character" trope and/or family secrets, and this was a perfect example of both. The story structure of The Hundred Year House is the hero of this book. I love that the story is told in reverse, and that there is a plethora of information revealed as you travel from 1999 to 1900. I liked seeing the pieces of the puzzle fall in place and the little moments when you witness other secrets get lost to time. The characters are flawed in the most human way. I was so invested in their stories from start to finish.

"Count it as the universe's cruelest irony that the ghosts, who alone could piece a whole story together, are uniquely unable to tell it."
I loved this book from the beginning -- I'm enamored with Makkai's style, and the structure was well chosen and well implemented. This will leave me lingering on impermanence and lost contexts for a while to come.

I'm mad because I absolutely adored The Borrower and therefore had really high hopes for this book, but it's just so slow and unsatisfying. I couldn't really get behind any of the characters, which is fine (no one said a protagonist has to be a good person), but none of them managed to be bad people in a way that made me want to read about them or care what happened to them despite it. The superatural element was the only truly interesting thing about this book and it was essentially nonexistent, just a topic of conversation to give the characters a connnection. lots of egregious racism that seemed to seve no purpose whatsoever. I have no idea how i was meant to be feeling at the end of the book or what exactly it was trying to tell me.
