I can’t seem to get into this one. Definitely a slow burn, which I normally prefer, and I even like being thrown into a story and having to figure out things as they happen around us. But I feel like I’m being thrown around by the writing instead of story.

Sometimes I don’t know who is speaking so I connect those events with a different character and have to fix it later when I realize it wasn’t Wyatt or Odette or Angel or True etc.

There’s a staccato barrage of terrible things happening or being remembered without much context, combined with lots of withholding (“I shouldn’t do this given my past…” kinda stuff). And all under a slightly flowery verbose writing style that I admit I could get used to and even find atmospheric if I wasn’t feeling so much like I’m trying to Read a Book instead of following the author’s story in my mind’s eye.

Might be a soft DNF or a donate. I’m sure others will like it based on other reviews!

What a wild ride! I did not expect to read this entire book in one sitting but I literally couldn't put it down. The twists shocked me.

We Are All The Same In The Dark by Julia Heaberlin fell short for me. Based on the cover alone, I was super excited to dive in to this read, but the pacing was off, which for me, took me right out of the story. I didn’t like the perspective changes, as I didn’t feel like it gave much new insight, and I especially didn’t like investing so much in one narrator, only to have the narrator change 2/3 of the way through. I understand WHY the narrator had to change based on the events of the book, but it made the story feel disjointed. I felt robbed of the emotional investment, and because I was no longer emotionally invested in the narrator, I didn’t get the satisfaction of a good ending. If you like books that end with vigilante justice, this is probably a good fit, but considering this book had a lack of lovable characters (some of them were likable but just not lovable) it wouldn’t be my first recommendation in murder mystery reads. The idea was interesting, and I actually did like the end, I just wish it had felt a little more purposeful after building up so much suspense.

This is a book with multiple mysteries trying to be solved across three timelines. It’s an interesting format, and I so very much appreciated a linear timeline (so many books go present day to the past and back and forth, and I hate it). Every character was well developed and to an extent, even the ones who started the book dead. Won’t spoil it for anyone, but another reason I liked the book is that the reveal seems so obvious only in retrospect. I really didn’t see the killer coming until the very end.

I began to enjoy the book until chapter 35?? that's when it began being a hit or miss. The story dragged on and was focused on details that weren't that important. I was annoyed. But I pushed on because I did enjoy the mystery of it all and I had questions. There were routes that the author took that were questionable at the end.
Like making Angel be the one to solve it all with a map falling onto her lap so to speak.
Ending felt rushed and strange. I was glad to had finish it to be honest.

Don't get me wrong, like I said I still enjoyed. I made the speed at 1.5? In order for it to be faster because the third narrator was a bit slow for me.

I loved the POVs. I loved the intertwining storylines of a small town who’s dealing with nationwide coverage of missing women. I didn’t love how you didn’t get more Angel’s story, but good writing also leaves you questioning.

I will say- I guessed the killer in part 2, but it did still hold it’s shock value.
