I have not been able to stop thinking about this book. I enjoyed it so much, and spent half the book mad at how I thought it was going to turn out, to be pleasantly surprised by the ending.

This is nothing like you expect

You will not be able to read this book without experiencing a wide variety of strong emotions. I kept reminding myself that I was not married to Simon and therefore could not look at my partner with distain for things Simon did. I tried to understand his motivation but his complete narcissism made it impossible. But I read straight through because I needed to know more about the details the author hinted at.

This was a pretty standard, enjoyable overall but not the most realistic or memorable thriller. I loved [b:The One|40670312|The One|John Marrs|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1612001976l/40670312._SY75_.jpg|52114608] and recently found myself at the library without my current read and I picked this up. I am glad I did. I enjoyed it but not nearly as much as The One. This story is told from two perspectives, Simon, a woman who leaves his wife and children and Catherine, the woman he left behind. Catherine initially believes that Simon disappeared by chance. However, we learn that Simon left by choice and we spend the rest of the story learning why. Their individual histories are told in the context of a conversation 25 years after Simon's disappearance after he randomly shows up on Catherine's doorstep. I enjoyed the book more toward the beginning. Things just felt more realistic initially and, as we keep learning more, I just had a hard time believing Simon's experiences after he left. He is also just a gigantic jerk...so there's that. I ended up reading two books simultaneously with just terrible male narrators so that got to be a little much. I picked up [b:Her Last Move|39926632|Her Last Move|John Marrs|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1536158478l/39926632._SY75_.jpg|61800055] on the same trip to the library and enjoyed this one enough that I still am looking forward to picking up another from Marrs' backlist.

This may be my favorite John Marrs book to date.

This book features one of the most deplorable characters I’ve ever read and I definitely dropped my jaw a few times reading this. I couldn’t put this one down. I had so much anxiety built up in the last bit.

My first five star of the year!
