Fantastic read: artfully written, full of engaging cultural references, surprisingly insightful. Truly the best book I’ve read in a long time, would highly recommend.

5 stars for plot and concept. 3 stars for overly verbose and, at times, pedantic prose.

A quintessential book that exemplifies the hubris of obnoxious people

The perfect beach/pool read for people who don’t like beach reads. Set in 2015 and dripping with 2010s vibes in a nostalgic way that’s perfect for the current return of indie sleaze. (Publication timing amirite?) It felt like the author was trying to win the award for largest number of big words used and I loved every minute of it. All the blurbs on the back of the book are correct.

I am in love with this book. It was so sharply witty and astute. It’s basically about two New York couples— all four of them are super attractive, rich, intelligent, and respected in their field of work. They slowly begin to become entangled in each other’s lives and it was so interesting to see how that played out. I think many people would find this book and its characters highly pretentious (because it is and they are). While this book is not a difficult read, it’s by no means easy. It’s quite dense and wordy and I found myself having to devour it slowly to fully appreciate the brilliance of the author’s writing. She has taken the myth of Narcissus and created a modern retelling that examines social status, desire, and egocentricity.

Okay. I feel like I could’ve enjoyed this more if I had chosen to read it at a time when reading felt like less of a chore. Because I enjoyed the story. It felt like Gossip Girl meets Succession. And it felt smart and unapologetically adult. There were horribly unlivable side characters who said offensive things, but generally I felt like the main characters were a bit boring with the exception of Diana.

Overall, I think I’d enjoy this on a reread because all the tools were there for me to enjoy this book, I just picked it up at the wrong time. But still, a strong 3.75 stars.
