What a god damn bore. How is this the pinnacle of the noir genre? Maybe I’m just too dumb to understand the love for this story. This clearly was meant for script, but I guess the author decided to capitalise on the market and publish it into a book... and now students studying it are all forced to buy it and fall into its trap.

The shift in narration was confusing and jarring and the characters weren’t really morally ambiguous or anything. They were boring, plain and when the “twist” happened - I just rolled my eyes and wanted to finish it even quicker. I am not looking forward to analysing it.

The only positive was that it was short.

3⭐️ [read for school]
this was not bad i just read it wrong. i read a chapter or two & than stop for a couple of days & completely forget what i read. if you wan to enjoy this book, read it in 2-4 sittings back to back.
the beginning was really slow & confusing but i liked the second half.

My first Graham Greene novel. Quick and to the point, considering how short it is, but don't be deceived: nothing is what it seems, here.

Although this was written in the 50's, this story felt very fresh and modern to me. First Graham Greene story I've read but I want to read more now. Gripping story, suspenseful too. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Had to read this for school. The writing was all over the place. Not for me at all.
