This is one of the best books I have ever read! It was hard sometimes to believe it is based on the life of a real person. You can’t help but fall in love with Pino and everything he went through.

This was an awesome book. An amazing story. It makes you think of all the other people who did stuff like this during WW2 and their stories. Life can be tragic but what can we do to enjoy it and make it memorable.

I had put off reading this, but it turned out to be a surprisingly good read, and, I feel, a good portrayal of life in northern Italy late in WWII as well as how humans carry on (for better or for worse) despite disaster around them.
There may also be some lessons about what "heroism" is, as seen from the outside versus experienced from within.

THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL BOOK. the descriptions of friendships and love and morals and families — ahh, it was a beauty to read. i absolutely ate this book up. the storytelling was well written and the story itself with all of its elements was great. i really loved especially how in depth Sullivan went with his storyline for Pino and how towards the end of the book i was living all of his experiences together with the character.
