The romance wasn't very interesting for me, but I loved the setting and overall enjoyed the book. Far more interested in the other sisters though.

*poking the main characters with a stick* "Come on, do something."

This was one of my most anticipated reads and I *did* enjoy it. The historical aspect was well done and painted a fresh background for a Victorian romance. For instance, I didn't know France had once invaded Mexico and I devoured every drop of information De la Rosa gave about that event. I also loved the side characters. It was immediately apparent who the love interests will be for the other Luna sisters and I adored every moment they had with them.

All that said, I'm struggling to outright call *this* is a romance. It was severely lacking in execution with two somewhat bland main characters. You can't give me a book built on a marriage of convenience trope and then not bring said marriage in until there are less than 100 pages left in the book. You're basically forcing me to take your word for it over a couple of random sex scenes that Ana María and Gideon cared for each other when there was so little before aside from a couple hot and cold conversations and watching from corners. I would have much preferred it if the marriage had been the inciting incident early on, and in that forced proximity they come to care for each other and *then* consummated things later on. It was a seriously missed opportunity.

So I enjoyed this, but I didn't love it. As I said, I'm way more interested in the sisters, especially since they seemed better developed than Ana María. Plus their dynamics with their love interests are already perfect.

I loved this book! It's kinda like a Mexican Bridgerton plus actual history and politics (:

I do think it ended abruptly, so I hope the author has plans for books about the other Luna sisters!

Pros: Excellent pining between the two leads. Well-done history discussing Mexico and its efforts for independence, abolition in the UK and the impact of colonialism in the Americas. Lovely relationship between Ana Maria and her sisters. Beautiful banter.

Cons: Pacing was a bit off; our main couple don't get married until well after halfway through the book. That's not what I was expecting given the synopsis. Also, the book had to do a lot of work setting up the rest of the characters and the series, which took time and focus away from our main couple.

It's been a while since I've read a historical romance and this one was a great trip back into it.

Victorian era, diverse politicians, rogues, and three Mexican heiresses. It was a lot of fun. The story was interesting and engaging with a lot of great historical details outside of just being a place in time
