good second book
This was a tough book for me. I love Lyra but seeing what she had to go through was oh so hard. It’s not going to stop me from reading the next book.

This book felt a bit lengthy in the middle, but I liked how the story was put together in the end. It’s not quite as good as the first one, but I hope the third book makes up for that.

This was a good read. I find Lyra entertaining and learning more about her background and magic was interesting. However the lack of control due to the mind control was really hard to read and there were a number of times I put it down and didn’t want to pick it back up. The resolution to the biggest problem was a little too pat given the enormity. I appreciate that Lyra is still struggling emotionally at the end of the book as that matches her character and made the issue more believable. And now I’m on to pick up the next book in the series!

This book was an excellent addition to the series with the dark and uncomfortable addition of mind control and compulsion that really does not have any loopholes. I think the book also added a lot to the character development of Lyra even if I would have loved to have seen more of the love interest Ronan in the story.
