I went in completely blind and honestly, I shouldn’t have.

Page 60 is right about the time where you find out it’s a romance about goddamn lizards and when I tell you I skedaddled on out of there, I was 🦎gone🦎

Really 3.5

Thoughts:

-Let's get it out of the way. The cover is ugly as fuck. The picture is??? but the font is truly nauseating.

-Really waaaaay too long. No book needs to be 1000 pages. There was what felt like endless amounts of walking across the planet.

-So much sexual assault and violence. Slavery, sexual slavery, multiple male and female rapes, just general violence towards everyone, women and children included. I felt a little sick after finishing this book. Even some of the stuff between Amber and Meoraq was reluctant (on account of the virus taking over) so that wasn't fun to read.

-World building was phenomenal. So much detail in the aliens and their religion and culture and way of life.

-It was unbelievable to me that people would be so mean to Amber (like it felt a little ham-fisted) and that they would follow Scott, who was CLEARLY incompetent, for so long. Scott was a frustrating villain and by frustrating I mean he lived 700 pages longer than he should have.

-The romance was really good. There was no instalove here. I loved to see Amber and Meoraq's understanding of each other grow. All the discussions they had of God were thought provoking and moved the plot forward. All that being said, not even the promise of a honestly to goodness true love and some amazing alien dick would convince me that everything Amber went through was worth it. I'd just stay on shitty Earth, thanks.

I was captivated by the first half of The Last Hour of Gann, which I considered one of the most engaging and well written stories I’ve ever read. The rich world-building, engaging science fiction plotline, and complex characters drew me in completely. However, the book took a disturbing turn in the latter half.

The shift towards brutal sexual violence and graphic gore was deeply unsettling. What had been a thrilling and immersive narrative became overwhelming and distressing. The intense and frequent scenes of violence not only felt gratuitous but also overshadowed the story’s initial depth and intrigue.

The contrast between the gripping beginning and the unsettling content in the back half made it impossible for me to continue. I ultimately had to put this book down and will likely never finish.

CW:
fatphobia, rape - so much rape, child sexual abuse, gory and gratuitous physical violence, starvation, kidnapping

This book was a wild ride, we have a religious zealot alien, people crash landing on a planet, and what overall felt like 3 books rolled into one. I appreciated all the world building and the character development across the whole story. I was clearly invested in the MMC and FMC because I was often getting mad at people on their behalf the whole time.

It was rough reading parts of this book though because the second book/chapter of the story was a bit dry and hard to follow and there is a a lot of sexual violence in the later parts of the book. Overall, it was a good story and I’m glad that everyone (outside of the sexual violence) got what they deserved imo. Because I couldn’t stand so many of the people.
